Argentina’s Movie The Clan (originally El Clan) has been chosen to represent Argentina in the category of foreign-language movies at the Oscars. This does not come as a surprise, as it broke records during the first weeks of its premier. With almost 2,5 million tickets sold, the movie turned into the second most grossing Argentine movie all time. The most grossing Argentine movie still is Wild Tales from director Damián Szifrón.
It is a film by Pablo Trapero and is based on a true story about the Puccio family. During Argentina’s last dictatorship, wealthy people were kidnapped by the Fuccio family. The family then asked for ransom.
The movie is still has a long way to go before going to Hollywood though. When each country is designated its official entry, the committee will select 5 official nominees. These 5 movies will go to the Oscars. Eventually, Academy members will be able to vote on one of the five movies and a winner shall be chosen.
