It has been a long discussion, but finally the decision has been made; the Columbus monument in Buenos Aires will be relocated. The statue of Christopher Columbus, now situated behind Casa Rosada, will move to Costanera Norte. With 41 votes in favor and 8 against, the decision has been made.
The monument made by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Zocchi was given to the Argentinian community in the beginning of the 20th century. The new location of the sculpture is at a harbor. From there, Columbus will ´watch´ towards its original continent Europe.
Relocating the monument will not be an easy job; it weights over 600 tones and it is 26 meters high. Moving the statue will be done in 30 to 40 trips in the coming weeks. To prevent Columbus from sinking, it´s necessary to prepare the new location for the monument. The whole operation is estimated to cost around $25m.
