It is said that the Obelisco is one of the most important historical monuments of Argentina.
The total weight of this massive pole in Buenos Aires is 170 ton, it is 67.5 meters high it has four windows and it will take you 206 steps to reach the top. No worries, there are seven stops during your journey to the top.
It was built to celebrate the 400th birthday of the city of Buenos Aires. Architect Alberto Prebisch has designed this building and it is made from Cordoba white stone, in only 31 days! The day they finished the Obelisco is the 22nd of May! Happy 80th birthday!
No one knows what the interior looks like, there is actually only one ladder. Unfortunately it is not open for public.
The location of the Obelisco, on the famous 8 de Julio and Avenida Corrientes is the exact same place where the San Nicolas church was located years ago.
Did you know that… in the 1980’s there were a lot of activists pouring paint on this building. Therefore they build a fence around the big monuments, so years ago you could get much closer to the monument. In 2005 the whole Obelisco was covered by a pink condom, to raise awareness for World Aids Day and it has also been transformed into a big pencil in 2006. This was a tribute to the lost students on the Night of the Pencils 30 years ago.
The video below will take you back in time where they were building this special building!
