Lasting most of the month of February in some South American cities, Carnival is celebrated with some gusto and this is no different in Buenos Aires. For 2013, in Argentina, Carnival weekend officially takes place from the 9th-12th of February and the Monday and Tuesday – 11th and 12th of February – are national holidays.

Starting January 12th, and finishing on the February 24th, there have been and continue to be a program of cultural events, over 100 in total, that are completely free for the general public. These include musical shows, theatre shows, kids activities, circus events as well as open-air ‘milongas’.

Open-air movies at the Amphitheatre of Parque Centenario are an option for kids (Fridays & Saturdays at 8:30pm), along with circus shows at Polo Circo and special activities on Saturdays and Sundays at Feria de Mataderos.

The first subway cars in Southern Hemisphere on the verge of being replaced.

They were the first working subway system in the Southern Hemisphere, but are now on the verge of being replaced by modern carriages. The wooden “La Brugeoise” cars of Line A in Buenos Aires have almost run their last kilometres underground.

The Belgian-made trains first operated on 1 December 1913, with the last trains operating from 1919. Today they are among the oldest carriages to still be in regular service. However, as part of a long-planned overhaul of the Subte, the graffiti covered cars will be replaced as of mid-January. (more…)
