Estela de Carlotto has been named an Outstanding Citizen by The Latin American Association for Integration (ALADI). Estela de Carlotto is the President of the organization Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, a human rights organization with the aim to find children who disappeared during the dictatorship of Argentina from 1976 to 1986. During this dictatorship around 500 pregnant women were kidnapped and enforced to give birth in detention.

It has been a long discussion, but finally the decision has been made; the Columbus monument in Buenos Aires will be relocated. The statue of Christopher Columbus, now situated behind Casa Rosada, will move to Costanera Norte. With 41 votes in favor and 8 against, the decision has been made.
The monument made by the Italian sculptor Arnaldo Zocchi was given to the Argentinian community in the beginning of the 20th century. The new location of the sculpture is at a harbor. From there, Columbus will ´watch´ towards its original continent Europe.

From 7 to 9 October, the V International Conference of Language Tourism will be held in Buenos Aires. During the conference they will discuss the value of language as a tourist, economic and cultural resource under the slogan “The Spanish, cultural diversity and tourism: alliances, tensions and challenges “. It is an initiative organized by SEA (Association of Language Centers of Argentina) and Tourism Authority for the City of Buenos. This event will take place at the Usina Art in Buenos Aires.

Creamfields, one of the largest electronic music festivals worldwide, will be held in Buenos Aires on Saturday November 8th 2014 at the Autodromo.
Since Buenos Aires’ first Creamfields festival in 2001 at the Hippodrome of San Isidro,(attended by around 18,000 people) the event has been growing in size and popularity. Therefore it has been moved to the Autodromo de Buenos Aires. The Autodromo has a capacity of more than 50,000 people.

Last July, Buenos Aires was chosen as the next city to host the Metropolis world meeting in 2015 after its sustained efforts since they joined the network. Metropolis promotes discussions of concerns and proposals for cities with more than one million inhabitants.
Metropolis provides a means by which the mayors of the largest cities in the world can formulate a statement. The World Association of Major Metropolises consists of more than 130 cities. The conferences are an opportunity for delegates – both expert and novice (more…)
For the first time medical staff will be tried in Argentina regarding the stolen babies during the military regime. A midwife and two doctors are charged with falsifying babies’ birth certificates. About 500 babies were stolen at birth during the 1976-83 military regime. They were given to other families that supported the regime. Biological parents were killed or disappeared. Prosecutors in Buenos Aires accuse the three of “providing essential assistance” to hide the babies’ identity and hand them over to sympathizers of the Argentine military government. “Mafalda in your soup", that is the name of a new exhibition at the National Library in Buenos Aires. It will start Wednesday 17 September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the cartoon character. The exposition shows sketches that Mafalda’s creator Quino (real name: Joaquín Salvador Lavado) made of her, and also books, translations and photographs. Even 50 years after her creation she is still a popular character.
Mafalda is a comic strip featuring a 6 year old girl. She reflects the Argentinian middle class and progressive youth concerned about humanity and world peace. (more…)
From 11 till 17 September Buenos Aires gets to enjoy The German Film Festival. It is the 14th consecutive edition of the event, with a record number of films this year.
For a country that produces about 150 films a year (similar to Argentina), the selection of 18 feature films allows a good first impression of what German cinema currently is. The comedy “Fack ju Göhte” is one of the films shown. In Germany this movie was the only one attracting an audience of more than 5 million people in 2013. Sunday, September 7th, Buenos Aires got to enjoy a new edition of the half marathon. This edition of the 21 kilometers turned out to be the most visited in history with 20,216 participants. 68% of them male and 32% female. Of all runners 2,600 were foreigners from 45 different countries.
The race started at 7.30 a.m. from Figueroa Alcorta and Monroe. 1 hour, 3 minutes and 48 seconds later the first contestant finished. The Argentine Matías Roth may now call himself the winner of the biggest race in South America. Best female runner is also from Argentina. Sandra Amarillo finished in 1 hour, 16 minutes (more…)
